Ryoto Hayami

R. Hayami is a great racer for intermediate players. He's "average" in every stat, which makes him great for using a very neutral player to master individual course layouts. He accelerates quicker than Jeter and Mariner which gives inexperienced players a bit of an edge, but he's got a greater top speed than Stewart so you can leave newbies in your wake.

Ayumi Stewart

Ayumi Stewart is the ideal racer for someone who's never even played the game before. She accelerates the fastest and she can take corners fairly well. Even if you wipe out (which any new player will!), she'll bounce back fairly quickly. More experienced players should avoid her simply because of her low top speed.

Miles Jeter

Miles Jeter can be a great choice for any level of player. He's the best turner (which is arguably the most important part of the game), his acceleration is decent, and his top speed is the second-highest. The problem is that if you sneeze at him or even just look at him wrong, he'll fall off his watercraft.

Dave Mariner

D. Mariner is for expert players only. His top speed is by far the highest in the game, but his acceleration and turning ability is by far the worst. You really aren't going to get very far with him unless you've mastered the courses with the other racers first. Be very careful with corners because it's possible to lose a whole lot of speed. He's usually the player the AI does best with.
